Wondering About Ayurveda and Where to Start?
Before you start your cleanse, you are going to want to know a few key things about Ayurveda and this article is going to give you some helpful insight.
There are so many things that Ayurveda teaches, from what foods to eat for proper balance to which side to sleep on at night! The information is endless, however, this is just a basic rundown of some important information on this beautiful life science.
Where did Ayurveda Come From?
Ayurveda is said to be about a 5,000 year old teaching, but there is evidence that it originated long before that. From what we know for sure, Ayurveda was cognized by the Rishi’s or ancient seers in India and recorded in the vedas. During colonization, much of this ancient wisdom was lost and for years is was shared through the lineage. Thanks to people like Dr. Vasant Laad, we in the west have access to Ayurvedic wisdom in the U.S. today.
How Ayurveda Works
The basis of this beautiful life science is in the elements. There are five major elements, or panchamahabhutas make up the three functional energies in nature. The five major elements are ether, air, water, fire, and earth.
Combined, these elements make up the three doshas which are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Through working in a holistic way to balance mind, body and spirit through implementing lifestyle practices that keep these dosas in balance, Ayurveda works to promote optimal health.
Some Important Sanskrit Words to Know
Dosha– fault or disease, the nature of imbalance and the groups of energetic qualities that circulate through the body. Many times you hear people saying they are a dosha( I am Kapha, or I am Vata) but this is incorrect. They have certain doshas, but in india you would never define yourself by a dosha.
Vata– the name for the energetics of air and ether as they appear in the body.
Pitta – the name for the energetics of water and fire as they appear in the body.
Kapha – the name for the energetics of water and earth as they appear in the body.
Prakriti– A natural state of balance.
Vikriti- A current state of imbalance.
Ama – Toxins accumulated in the body. These accumulations are usually the reason for an accumulation of a dosha.
Dinacarya– Daily routine.Typically a morning and an evening routine.
Prana– Life force energy
Sattvic – A peaceful and energetic clear state of mind, also refers to fresh, light and nourishing foods
Pacify/ Pacifying-To reduce or bring down a certain dosha in the body.
A Little More About the Doshas
When Vata is out of balance in the body:
Constipation, excessive gas, dry Skin, trouble gaining weight, feeling cold all the time, trouble sleeping, brittle nails and hair, cracking pain in the joints
When Pitta is out of balance in the body:
Acid reflux, digesting too quickly as to not absorb nutrients, acne, skin rash or irritation, inflammation, overheating and excessive sweating, body odor, bad breath, high blood pressure due to anger, headaches, fever, loose stools and diarrhea
When Kapha is out of balance in the body:
Excessive weight, oily skin, bloating, lethargy, oversleeping, overeating, excess mucus in the sinus and chest
If you don’t have access to seeing and Ayurvedic Practitioner, who usually does a series of tests to determine your prakriti and vikriti, you can take online quizzes, like this one offered by Banyan Botanicals, to find out which doshas are out of balance in your body.
